Associate Director, Libraries, Scholarly Communication, and Museums, Ithaka S+R
Title: Associate Director, Libraries, Scholarly Communication, and Museums, Ithaka S+R
Work Location: New York, Princeton, Ann Arbor, or Remote
Experience Level: Mid-Senior or Director Level
ITHAKA’s mission is to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our services—Artstor, JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R—enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome historical barriers to education. In carrying out our mission, as employees we feel a deep responsibility to each other and our well-being, and are committed to building and sustaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
The Role
Ithaka S+R is hiring for an Associate Director within our Libraries, Scholarly Communications, and Museums program (LSCM). The Associate Director leads one of the teams that comprise this program, with responsibility for intellectual direction, community engagement, project development and revenue generation, and overall team management. The team’s current staffing level is 5-7 FTE direct reports, with an opportunity over time to grow the size of the team and introduce additional management structure.
While the team’s research agenda will evolve over time and be guided by the Associate Director, at this point the team is largely focused on Organizations and Talent, with key areas of emphasis including:
• Talent management, employee demographics, and organizational diversity and equity (including an anti-racism talent management audit service);
• Professions and professionals, including librarians, archivists, and museum employees;
• Leadership and governance for organizations and collaborations;
• Business models and organizational adaptation.
The team collaborates closely with the other two LSCM program areas, one focused on Users & Markets and the other on Collections & Curation. It also collaborates with colleagues elsewhere in the organization, including the S+R Educational Transformation program and our Labs team, as well as outside partners.
The Associate Director serves as a member of the LSCM program’s leadership team, working collaboratively with the Director, the other Associate Director, our Senior Strategist, our Publications and Communications Lead, and our Strategic Collaborations Lead, to collectively steer its intellectual agenda, maximize the impact of its work, and develop its business.
Responsibilities
• Develop and oversee our research and policy agenda for Organizations and Talent, represent Ithaka S+R with relevant community members and funders, and design fundable research projects to advance this research agenda.
• Design and implement mission-aligned advisory engagements and products/services (for example, talent audits and other client projects), including managing these as businesses, taking responsibility for outreach, and ensuring client impact and satisfaction.
• Ensure that research, policy, advisory, and other work is performed at the highest levels of quality while meeting timeline and budget constraints.
• Train, supervise, and mentor a team of 5 to 7 direct reports, some of whom may have managerial roles themselves, and work collaboratively with other team members.
• Manage relationships with the communities we serve including partner collaborators and organizations, requiring a combination of travel and virtual meetings.
Experience and Skills
We welcome candidates from a variety of backgrounds who possess any combination of professional experience, volunteer work, coursework, and other transferable skills toward these qualifications.
• Seven or more years of relevant full-time experience, including either
o 1) a period of service as an organizational leader (director, associate director, etc) at a library, museum, or similar type of institution; or
o 2) deep experience or expertise in talent management, organizational diversity, anti-racism, and/or organizations of color.
• Experience managing complex projects, setting agendas and leading meetings, and communicating with both internal and external stakeholders.
• Committed to our organizational values of belonging, evidence, speed, teamwork, and trust.
• Demonstrated ability to manage marketing initiatives and relationship-driven outreach, generating revenue through grant funding, research sponsorship, other kinds of institutional advancement, and/or sales of services.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments concurrently, perform well under pressure, and meet deadlines, while ensuring acute attention to detail and accuracy.
• Demonstrated leadership and teamwork, including managing others directly, working collaboratively, and mentoring junior colleagues.
• Superior research, writing, proofreading, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts and research findings into compelling, accessible, and well-written reports and engaging presentations.
• Ability to work in our open, collaborative, and team-oriented culture.
• Preferred but not required:
• Advanced training in and/or demonstrated experience with a variety of research methods, which may include designing and managing large-scale surveys, ethnographic and other qualitative analysis, and/or policy analysis.
• Proficiency with statistical, data visualization, and/or qualitative data analysis software (e.g., SAS, STATA, SPSS, R, NVivo, ATLAS.ti, Tableau).
• Experience supporting an IRB submission process and/or coordinating other types of institutional research approvals.
