Senior Director of Marketing, Communications and Visitor Experience

The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world's leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through our exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since our founding in 1974, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. Our new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites our school and museum in one space to become the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing.
Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Marketing, Communications and Visitor Experience is responsible for creatively expanding ICP's brand both locally and internationally, and audience demographic beyond its current boundaries. Enhances ICP's reputation to that of thought leader and discussion owner around the image's place in the fast-developing, widely accessible global, digital environment. They will have a strong comfort within an entrepreneurial atmosphere and will provide strategic and creative leadership in all of ICP's communication efforts including public relations; branding; marketing; advertising; social media; promotions; audience development; external and internal communications, and crisis and online communications. The individual will manage the Marketing and Communications and Visitor Experience teams. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to rebrand and reposition existing and historic organizational strengths in new and innovative ways that advance ICP's mission and help achieve strategic goals and objectives.
Essential Functions and Duties:
• Expands ICP brand identity both locally and internationally by developing awareness campaigns, and identifying new markets,
• Understands data analytics, perform market trend analysis, formulates data driven strategies and create market trend and data analysis reports.
• Establish an overall strategic communications plan for the institution and its programs including exhibitions, collections, education, and community outreach.
• Partners with other departments, including Development, Education, and Exhibitions, to meet all communications and marketing needs on an ongoing basis
• Serves as writer and editor for all print and online communications, including several social media platforms
• Oversees brand guideline application; manages development of on-brand design solutions for all communications
• Creating and managing social and cultural events, and occasional lobby programming projects
• Oversees publications including exhibition catalogues, education course materials, the annual report, fundraising materials and website content and design
• Makes decisions relative to the selection, promotion, utilization, and retention of Marketing and Communications staff, providing effective and engaged leadership
• Spokesperson for the institution; serves as main media contact; leads media outreach and promotional activities for exhibitions, educational programs, public programs, and fundraising events; manages exhibition media preview events; oversees all advertising
• Serves as speechwriter for the Executive Director/CEO and Trustees
• Core member of the ICP Crisis Team; participates in crisis planning; responsible for crisis communications
• Manages overall budget encompassing marketing activities of all departments
• Requires availability beyond traditional office hours for activities and events during evenings and weekends
Visitor Experience
• Broadens audience demographics, both locally and internationally, by identifying potential markets and developing marketing campaigns to attract new audiences.
• Develop overall vision and strategy for ICP Visitor Experience from first contact with the visitor through the lifecycle of their stay.
• Generate longer term goals such as creating a special events strategy, top-down licensing strategy, e-commerce strategy, developing strategies for Publications, pitching new products and services and paid experiences.
• Develop training and systems enabling staff to recognize opportunities to cross-promote ICP's core functions to achieve new members, renewals, and upgrades, encourage class and programming enrollment, identify potential donors, and the like (sell ICP)
• Managing the Visitor Experience budget; working with the VE team to broaden audience demographic
Additional Responsibilities:
• Develops content for Board meetings and presents to the Trustees on communications strategies and activities
• Manages external resources and partners (retailers, peer institutions, design firms, advertising agencies, and vendors)

Minimum Qualifications:
Education Requirement:
• Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred
Minimum Experience Requirement:
• Ten+ years' experience in communications, including senior management experience
• Proven track record of successfully managing a strategic communications plan that creatively expands audiences across multiple channels, both locally and internationally
• Strong understanding of marketing for a tourist destination, experience with NYC&CO a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize new avenues to generate organizational interest and following
• Exceptionally strong communicator with excellent written, oral, organizational, public speaking, presentation, and interpersonal communications skills
• Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment, with a high level of creativity and autonomy; to work well under pressure and manage details of concurrent projects
• Ability to develop positive internal and external working relationships, and interact effectively with Trustees, donors, media, the public, and colleagues at all levels
• Knowledge of national arts and audience trends; and experience within the cultural sector, specifically photography and modern and contemporary visual arts, preferred

• Knowledge of Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Cloud, Drupal CMS, and Asana preferred

• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, communication, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask
• Skilled at analyzing data to inform marketing decisions and strategies to build results-oriented marketing campaigns
• Experienced managing budgets
• Excellent writing and presentation skills
