Head Preparator, Registration Department

The Job:

Full time, Exempt position.

The Head Preparator coordinates and supervises the museum’s preparators in the safe handling, movement and installation of works of art using standard museum practices. Coordinate projects in close communications with registrars, curators, conservators, designers, security, facilities and outside vendors to ensure proper scheduling and timely execution of projects. Assist the Art Crew as needed with the movement and installation of works of art.

In this role, you will…

  • Supervise work performed by the preparators, temporary staff and outside contractors.
  • Direct workflow and ensure all schedules are met by prioritizing, assigning, and overseeing work.
  • Participate in decisions relating to preparator selection, promotion, termination and performance management.
  • Hire, train, and oversee temporary help used for special projects and exhibitions.
  • Oversee the preparation of galleries and works of art for installation/deinstallation.
  • Serve as liaison between designers and contractors.
  • In coordination with Exhibition Designer, oversee construction of exhibition furniture, including platforms, pedestals, and cases.
  • Prepare the design and oversee the construction of armatures, supports and other installation devices to ensure works of art are properly and safely installed.
  • Oversee and handle the packing and unpacking of works of art.
  • Train staff on proper handling of works of art to instill a sense of respect for the fragile nature of the art.
  • Assist in the collection and delivery of art by Mia’s cargo van. Occasionally serve as a courier.
  • Manage projects and staffing within budget constraints and maintain and monitor material inventory.
  • Determine material and equipment needs and arrange for purchases or repairs in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Provide technical expertise to museum staff including input on cost of materials, contractors, etc., for the development of department and exhibition budgets.

Specific Requirements

  • BA in Art History, Studio Arts, Museum Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Nine or more years of experience in a fine art museum or similar institution installing major exhibitions.
  • Knowledge of works of art and standard museum practices and the requirements for proper handling and movement.
  • Two or more years of proven supervisory experience.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage outside contractors.
  • Exceptional communication/interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools, shop machines, forklift, scissor lift, pallet truck, and rental trucks.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and motor vehicle record check required.
