The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world's leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through our exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since our founding in 1974, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. Our new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites our school and museum in one space to become the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing.

 

Position Summary:

 

The International Center of Photography seeks an Assistant Curator with specific expertise in photography and an historical and theoretical understanding of photography's connections to art and media culture. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in the history of photography and art as well as experience working with living artists. The Assistant/Associate Curator of Exhibitions participates in exhibition planning and coordination and assists with the management and administration of the Exhibitions Department.

The Assistant Curator will work closely with the Senior Manager of Exhibitions and Collections as well as with the Marketing and Communications, Development, Visitor Experience, Finance, and Operations teams to realize initiatives.

 

Essential Functions and Duties:

Curatorial

  • Contribute to exhibition planning, research, and production.
  • Conceptualize and Independently propose artist collaborations, special projects, exhibitions and accompanying publications.
  • Participate in interdepartmental coordination and program planning.
  • Undertake research related to exhibitions and contextualizing ICP's history and institutional mission
  • Participate in public lectures, publications, and events at ICP and other institutions.
  • Prepare checklists, exhibition label copy, signage for exhibitions.
  • Work with publishers on catalogue preparation.
  • Design and implement public programs and educational components of exhibitions
  • Write, edit, assist in the production of program-related materials, including outreach materiasl, items for publications and those required for fundraising and internal and external communications
  • Serves as a liaison with artists and external

Exhibition Management

  • Oversee exhibition production and production schedules.
  • Oversee budget and manage bills and expenditures related to the exhibitions.
  • Coordinate with exhibition and graphic designers and production department.
  • Overseeing production on traveling shows and special projects

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Requirement:

  • MA in art history, museum studies, preferably History of Photography, or related area equivalent experience. PhD a plus.

Minimum Experience Requirement:

  • At least three years' museum experience in curatorial with a specialization in photography or equivalent in other art and commercial gallery contexts.
  • Significant project management experience.
  • Museum administration experience.

Additional Competency Requirement (Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Knowledge of the history of photography
  • Familiarity with standard museum practices
  • Understanding of and familiarity with relevant computer applications
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, especially when dealing with trustees, patrons, and members of the public
  • Knowledge of a foreign language preferable
  • Ability to supervise several projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Comfortable both leading a team as well as being a participating team member
