Background
Dia Art Foundation consists of eight permanent sites across the United States and Germany, as well as three changing exhibition spaces in New York State: Dia Chelsea, in New York City; Dia Beacon, in the Hudson Valley; and Dia Bridgehampton, on Long Island. Dia has renovated and expanded its Dia Chelsea site (opened April 2021), has plans to renovate and expand the SoHo sites (opening 2023), and will embark on a major external and internal renovation at Dia Beacon to make accessible the external landscape and improve the internal facility. Founded in 1974, Dia is committed to advancing, realizing, and preserving the vision of artists. Since its inauguration, the organization has undergone several shifts in focus, adding both new artists and sites. Over the last six years, Dia has carefully grown its program, commissions, and collection to reflect a more inclusive and expansive vision for staff, audiences, and the future of the institution.
Position Summary
Dia Art Foundation seeks a Learning and Engagement Associate based at Dia Beacon in Beacon, New York. The Learning and Engagement Associate provides day-to-day management, administrative coordination, and hands-on support for a range of participatory programs that serve children and families, community partners, intergenerational audiences, K¬–12 students and educators, youth, and young adults. In close collaboration with the Learning and Engagement team, including Dia Guides and Artist Educators, and with oversight from the Manager of Learning and Engagement, this person serves as a key thinker in the development of Beacon-based learning programs, as well as the primary on-the-ground lead for programming for audiences of all ages.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Provides day-to-day administrative management and hands-on production support for engagement-driven programs for all Dia Beacon-based learning initiatives. These include youth and young-adult programs such as Dia Teens, internships, fellowships, and alumni programming; in-gallery and studio-based programs for families and intergenerational audiences; and K–12 school partnership programs, including the Arts Education Program and professional development opportunities for local educators
• Attends all Dia Beacon-based programs and serves as the lead communications contact and on-site liaison for all program participants, artist educators, guest artists, school partners (students, teachers, site providers, and school or agency administrators), and community partners, actively prioritizing relationship-building and responsive engagement
• Collaborates with the rest of the Learning and Engagement team on the development, administration, and implementation of new initiatives and engagement-driven public programs
• Works collaboratively with Artist Educators to facilitate the development of original programs and contributes actively to Dia’s broader learning community
• Documents and evaluates engagement-driven programs and supports participatory archiving through developing, organizing, synthesizing, and sharing accessible community-authored materials
• Oversees Dia Beacon-based departmental spaces and internal processes, including preparing and organizing Dia’s classroom, managing the department calendar, tracking program budgets, and other administrative responsibilities
Education, Certifications, Experience:
• BA in art history, education, museum studies, or related field required
• At least two years of applied experience, programmatic and/or administrative, ideally in a non-profit educational or contemporary art organization
• Experience directly supporting artists and/or educators in the design and delivery of innovative arts-related programming for intergenerational audiences in an educational capacity, either formal (schools) or informal (museums, summer programs, etc.)
• Experience working with populations diverse in background, age, and learning styles and abilities, and enthusiasm for making accessible and inclusive programs
• Experience cultivating collaborative partnerships preferred
• Arts advocacy experience is a plus
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Must demonstrate a commitment to making art accessible to a broad public through dynamic and innovative programs
• Interest in and knowledge of both contemporary art and pedagogy
• Interest in the educational landscape of the Hudson Valley and/or working knowledge of community-based organizations or resources within Beacon’s neighboring communities
• Cultural fluency, empathy, collaborative capacity, and commitment to best practices (specifically diversity, equity, access, and inclusion) in arts education and museum education is essential
• Exhibits curiosity and an eagerness to grow as a professional and as a learner in a team setting
• Takes initiative and is a strategic thinker able to synthesize information in support of a purposeful, values-driven program
• Able to work independently and prioritize and balance short- and long-term goals and projects
• Clear and proactive communicator, comfortable with public speaking and engagement across audiences
• Interested in using educational technologies or web-based media to enhance accessible program development
• Understanding of qualitative program evaluation and analysis desired
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with both Mac and PC platforms
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
• This is a full-time position with a Tuesday–Saturday schedule in a hybrid environment with no fewer than 3 days in the office
• Occasional meetings and program implementation at Dia Chelsea in New York City is required; regularly occurring weekend or evening program support is also required
• Significant computer work, which may require repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications
• Occasional lifting, bending, pulling, collating, and filing, some of which could be heavy (up to 15 lbs.) or require the use of carts
