Director of Individual Giving

The Director of Individual Giving will oversee and be responsible for growing The Studio Museum in Harlem’s major gifts program, including its patron programs, attracting new donors, retaining existing donors, and renewing lapsed donors. Additionally, they will work closely with the Director of Institutional Advancement and the Director and Chief Curator to complete the Museum’s comprehensive, multi-million dollar capital campaign in support of the institution’s new building on 125th Street in Harlem. They also will be responsible for growing the Museum’s endowment by expanding the Museum’s planning, giving program, and newly launched Legacy Society.

As a senior leader of the Development team, this person will be excellent at frontline fundraising, developing strategy and infrastructure, and managing a team to achieve successful outcomes. They will develop and sustain productive and functional cross-departmental relationships (e.g., Communications, Education, Curatorial and Public Programs) to achieve annual giving goals.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, and implement a robust and creative fundraising program focused on individuals, including planned giving, to meet the Museum’s growth projections and strategic goals
  • Manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the capacity to make unrestricted and restricted philanthropic gifts of $25,000 and higher and directly solicit and close gifts from major donors and prospects in collaboration with the Director and Chief Curator, Director of Institutional Advancement, and other internal stakeholders
  • Manage Development Associate in stewarding and growing Museum’s patron groups
  • Work with public programs and communications teams to develop compelling collateral materials, including a sophisticated case for support
  • Utilize data and metrics to benchmark efforts, inform strategic and tactical decision-making, and identify broad-based solicitation opportunities
  • Support and effectively deploy the Museum’s executive leadership, programmatic staff, and trustees, as appropriate, in the cultivation and solicitation of donors
  • Serve as a representative of The Studio Museum in Harlem to key stakeholders such as the Board of Trustees, patrons, and major donors, among others
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Eight or more years of progressive experience in individual fundraising, preferably in the culture and arts landscapes
  • Proven track record in raising multiple six+ figure gifts with broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising 
  • Exceptional management, leadership, presentation, and written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with an exceptional eye for detail, accuracy, and focus on meeting all deadlines and performance goals
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strong and effective internal and external relationships
  • Experience in supervising and motivating staff
  • Deep knowledge of metrics-based management, cultivation, solicitation strategies
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge desired
  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles desired
  • An understanding of cultural fundraising and NYC donor/philanthropic landscape preferred
