The Director of Education and Public Programs leads the design and implementation of the museum’s special events and education programs for the general public. This position oversees the museum’s educational and public programs for K-12 students, family audiences, and adult visitors and manages the day-to-day work of the Education department and Special Events staff. Working collaboratively across the museum and with Duke and Durham partners, this position serves to meaningfully engage and cultivate new and long-term relationships with community groups and local audiences. The Director of Education and Public Programs plays a key role in further establishing the museum as a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive space for educational and civic engagement.
This position supervises the full-time and part-time museum educators, special events staff as well as the part-time Gallery Guides. Reports to the Director.
Work Performed
Leads the conceptualization, design, and implementation of the museum’s full calendar of public programs in collaboration with the Curatorial, Development, Operations, Academic Initiatives and Marketing departments.
Meaningfully engages and cultivates new and long-term relationships with community groups and local audiences.
Supervises and supports Education and Special Events department staff, including hiring, training, assigning/reviewing work, conducting performance evaluations, addressing work issues, and approving time.
Performs other related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications: At least 5 years of experience with developing public programs and community partnerships in the museum or arts sector. Knowledge of best practices and demonstrated track record with diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion efforts in museums or cultural institutions. Highly collaborative and communicative. Excellent project management and organizational skills. Ability to motivate others and manage projects independently and simultaneously. Knowledge of Durham and its many communities a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Work requires communications, analytical and organization skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters degree in a related field preferred.
Experience: Position requires a minimum of 5 years related experience.
