Production Director, Publications
The Museum of Modern Art’s publications program has been an integral part of the Museum’s mission since its founding in 1929. MoMA publications—for nearly 100 years the principal vehicles for disseminating groundbreaking curatorial scholarship to a wide audience—represents the range and diversity of the Museum’s collections and programming and serves as valuable resources for scholars, students, and art lovers alike.
The Department of Publications produces 20 to 40 books annually, including new titles, co-publications, foreign-language editions, facsimile editions, and reprints. MoMA’s award-winning, globally distributed publications range from exhibition catalogues and collection highlights to scholarly resources and children’s books.
We are currently accepting applications for a Production Director who will be responsible for bringing the Museum’s exhibition catalogues, collectible facsimiles, and trade books to life, taking them from first concept to final product. Through daily collaborations with departmental colleagues, Museum curators, contemporary artists, book designers, and printers, the Production Director ensures that each book project meets the Museum’s exacting design and production standards.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Creates and maintains project budgets and schedules; shapes project content and specifications; participates in the development of new projects; ensures success of international co-editions and collaborations, limited editions, and artist books.
- Maintains manufacturing budgets; oversees project expenditures and cost overruns; evaluates and signs all invoices; trouble-shoots problems.
- Solicits and manages freelance book designers and production managers as needed; evaluates vendor samples and chooses suppliers that are consistent with the quality required by the Museum and consistent with its broader diversity and sustainability goals; solicits quotations from vendors and provides cost estimates; negotiates manufacturing budgets/contracts; evaluates vendor performance.
- Conceptualizes and plans new book projects; coordinates the work of the Museum’s curatorial, editorial, and design staff with outside suppliers; plans and maintains production schedules; purchases necessary book materials; maintains project budgets; supervises all technical aspects of book manufacturing, including vendor selection and management, work flows, image capture evaluation, color fidelity and management, image retouching, and book design; travels on press, either domestically or abroad, as required, in order to ensure that the quality of work meets or exceeds the quality required by the Museum; coordinates shipping of finished books from the vendor to the Museum’s warehouse and those of its partners and distributors.
- Leads departmental efforts with regard to sustainability, staying abreast of advancements in printing and material production and seeking to work with carbon neutral vendors over the next five years.
- Participates in recruitment for select open positions and makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies; supervises assigned staff on daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.; oversees all aspects of projects assigned to Production staff; ensures compliance with and comprehension of Museum policies and relevant collective bargaining agreements, as applicable; manages the constructive discipline process, as warranted; conducts annual performance reviews with direct staff; and undertakes any other duties as assigned by the Publisher, Acting Publishers, or Deputy Director.
- Attends one of three monthly Collection Working Group meetings (Early Modern, Mid-Century, and Contemporary), on a rotating basis.
Requirements:
- Eight to ten years’ relevant experience in art book production. Clear comprehension of the technical aspects of the graphic arts, including knowledge of desktop production, all aspects of multicolor offset pre-press and printing, color correction, digital file management, and new printing technologies.
- Museum publishing experience and knowledge of art history preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of the art book designer landscape and longstanding relationships with the individuals who work in the field.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and management skills.
- Ability to firmly but diplomatically enforce production and curatorial deadlines.
- Computer skills in a Mac environment, including expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
- Fully vaccinated with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and/or the World Health Organization authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a qualified disability or sincerely held religious belief or other legal basis).

Reports to: Publisher/Acting Publishers
Salary Range: Minimum of $90,000 to a maximum of $140,000 per annum
