Curatorial Assistant

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami seeks a Curatorial Assistant to support the museum’s curatorial department, permanent collection and exhibition efforts. Reporting to the Curator, they will support the museum’s strategic endeavors focused on the permanent collection, conduct research about artists and works in the collection, collaborate on maintaining the collection’s presence on the website and assist with needs related to exhibitions including research and loan preparation. This position will also take on research and aspects of artist liaising for the museum’s temporary exhibitions including our public art projects Art on the Plaza and Welcome to Paradise.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

• Exhibition research and administration, including preparing loan requests; assisting in the preparation of checklists and didactic materials; and liaising with other departments on installation, catalogue production, etc.

• Responsible for the digitization efforts of the permanent collection including documentation and file organization.

• Research on collection artists and works of art, as well as potential acquisitions and gifts.

• Assisting with preparation for Collection Committee meetings.

• Reviewing and cataloguing works of art.

• Collaborating with the Registrar on maintenance of the collection and its related files.

• Serve as the curatorial point person to expand the collection’s presence on the website.

• Answer queries from both the general public and scholars regarding the permanent collection.

• Oversee the upkeep of exhibition history documentation and the outgoing loan log.

• Alongside the registrar, manage all aspects of the collection’s inventory in The Museum System (TMS) database, including cataloguing object details, loans, provenance, appraisals, and exhibition history.

• Assist with general departmental administration, including scheduling and meeting coordination.

• Manage all rights and reproductions requests.

• Additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Art History or related field or minimum of 4 years working experience in related field.

• Strong background in contemporary art.

• Experience in a museum or cultural organization.

• Experience with collections database systems (ex: EmBARK, artlogic, TMS).

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and in an atmosphere of continual growth and rapid change.

• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple deadlines.

• Ability to learn new skills and tools quickly and proficiently.


Requirements:

• Exceptional interpersonal skills.

• Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.

• Minimum two years of administrative experience in an office setting.

• Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with artists/gallerists /lenders

• Experience communicating with artists/gallerists /lenders on the phone, via email, and in-person.

• Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality related to exhibitions and lenders.

• Superior written, verbal, and oral communication skills.

This is a full-time, salaried position that requires some early morning, late evening and weekend hours as necessary, especially during periods of high volume (Miami Art Week, exhibition openings, etc.). A level 2 background check will be required upon the offer of employment.

Compensation: Salary starting at $50,000 annually, commensurate with experience and including an excellent benefits package.
