The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for an Assistant or Associate Curator of Asian Art, with preference for specialization in the art of Japan. Reporting to the Nancy and Peter Lee Associate Curator of Asian Art, the Curator will help shape the care, display, interpretation, and growth of the Museum’s distinguished collections of Asian art. As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building designed by David Adjaye, scheduled to open in 2025, the Curator will contribute to collections galleries, exhibitions, research, and acquisitions.

Princeton’s renowned collection includes over 15,000 works from China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, Southeast and Central Asia, dating from the Neolithic period to the present. The Museum’s collection of Japanese art has grown considerably in the last 20 years, with works ranging from Jōmon to modern ceramics. The successful candidate will have a broad familiarity with the art history of Asia, together with a curiosity to think expansively and forge connections across periods, cultures, and media. 

The Curator will shape installations, originate research-driven exhibitions, conduct collections and provenance research, publish, and work with registrars and conservators on collections care. With purchase endowments that allow the collections to be shaped intentionally, the Curator will secure new acquisitions through both gifts and purchase. The Curator will contribute to university teaching and collaborate with faculty, students, and other communities through public programs. Working within a team environment, the Curator may supervise researchers and interns; and will steward relationships with collectors, donors, dealers, and artists. Princeton's Departments of Art & Archaeology and East Asian Studies with the Tang Center for East Asian Art and other resources on campus, offer unparalleled opportunities for collaboration. 

The successful candidate will have expertise in Japanese art history and the ability to support connections with other collections areas. An M.A. in art history or a related field is required; Ph.D. is preferred but not required. They will have organized exhibitions; a record of scholarly publication; knowledge of international cultural property and export laws and ethics; experience with collections care; and a commitment to increasing access to knowledge. Appropriate language skills for area(s) of expertise required. Art Museum curatorial salary ranges are assistant curator: $70,000-$90,000; associate curator: $80,000-$100,000.
