Chair of Exhibition Strategy

The Job

Work with the museum’s Director, Deputy Director, and curators to develop exhibitions that broaden Mia’s audience and enhance Mia’s brand and reputation. Establish strategic partnerships with sister organizations to co-develop important exhibitions. In order to fully capitalize on Mia’s special exhibition program, work to solidify the museum’s special exhibition calendar at least five to seven years out.

 

In this role, you will…

1. Develop art historically significant exhibitions that broaden Mia’s audience while enhancing its reputation and brand.

  • Vet and optimize exhibition proposals.
  • Ensure that the goals and strategy for special exhibitions are articulated in the Exhibition Brief. 
  • Oversee development of adult programs as they relate to exhibitions.
  • Oversee the process to create a title and blurb for each special exhibition. 
  • Oversee the exhibition team (Smart Team) for each special exhibition, working in close collaboration across divisions by managing implementation schedules as well as outlining important milestones and tracking their completion
  • Work with the Head of Exhibition to ensure the project stays within budget and adheres to the negotiated contract.
  • Work with the Manager of Curatorial Project Management towards project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules and communication platforms (Asana).

 

2. Procure exhibition partnerships among sister museums worldwide. 

  • Alert the Director, Deputy Director of potentially advantageous partnerships evolving at sister organizations at the ground level. 
  • Connect Mia’s curators to relevant personnel at sister organizations with an eye to developing partnerships

 

3. Supervisory duties

  • Supervise Head of Exhibition
  • Supervise Head of Interactive Media
  • Supervise Exhibition Designer 

 

4. Place Mia exhibitions at other art museum venues

  • Working with Mia’s curators, develop “sell sheets” and “fact sheets” for Mia generated exhibition as marketing tools to secure additional venues
  • Scout for potential venues for Mia generated exhibitions

 

5. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

  • Proven experience mentoring and developing staff with strong department management skills.

 

Requirements:

Required:

  • M.A. in Art History and a deep knowledge of the art museum field in general
  • At least 10 years of previous experience within an art museum 
  • Strong record of research with proven experience organizing exhibitions of high quality
  • Strong budget, exhibitions, programs, and strategic planning experience and demonstrated skills in those areas.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

 

Preferred:

  • Ph.D. in Art History
