Associate Curator of Latin American Art
JOB DESCRIPTION AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Tucson Museum of Art’s Associate Curator of Latin American Art will be an experienced, visionary, collaborative professional responsible for managing, developing, and presenting the Tucson Museum of Art's Latin American Art Collection, which includes Spanish Colonial, post-Colonial, Modern and Contemporary, and folk art collections, with emphasis on Art of Ancient Americas. They will have the intellectual vision and practical skills necessary to present, interpret, build, and care for the museum's Latin American Art collection. Essential requirements include the curation of thought-provoking temporary exhibitions and long-term gallery installations that incorporate the museum’s holdings and loans, as well as the production of related publications, public lectures, programs, and other engagement opportunities.
This position reports to TMA’s Senior Curator, Glasser Curator of Art of the American West, and works closely with the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Registrar/Collections Manager, with various departments, and has frequent contact with the Director / Chief Executive Officer. This position will also support the museum’s dynamic community engagement activities, educational programming, and public tours and lectures, and will contribute to the accessibility of the museum and its collections and exhibitions.
This position is detail-oriented and requires an understanding of the highest professional museum practices and a thorough knowledge of art history with specific expertise in Latin American Art.
The ideal candidate will be attuned to dynamic changes in the museum field; maintain and expand their connections with artists, curators, and museum leaders nationally and internationally; and communicate effectively with scholarly and broad audiences. We seek a curator eager to develop new initiatives and exhibitions inspired by the museum’s collections as well as the dynamic culture and history of the southwest region of the United States.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Oversee the proper care, conservation, installation, and maintenance of the Latin American Art collections.
· Support the museum’s dynamic community engagement activities, educational programming, and public tours and lectures, and contribute to the accessibility of the museum and its collections and exhibitions.
· Actively pursue the advice and expertise of a broad network of scholars, museum colleagues, and source communities to effectively and imaginatively develop collections and related research and exhibition projects outside of their primary area of study
· Enhance the collection by seeking, researching and presenting for approval acquisitions and loans and make the case for deaccession as needed.
· Assess the condition of collections and identify vulnerable material for preservation and conservation. Work with Collections Manager / Registrar and conservators to support treatments and related research.
· Collaborate with the Curatorial, Collections, Education, and Engagement departments to develop and implement a strategic, balanced, and thought-provoking exhibitions program and to develop innovative approaches to permanent collection installations.
In close partnership with the museum’s CEO and Director of Advancement and Strategic Initiatives, engage in advancement efforts to support curatorial priorities, such as actively seeking and cultivating collectors and donors for both funding and gifts of art.
· Collaborate with the Engagement & Inclusion and Education departments to help develop and implement public programs, activities, and events that are exhibition and collection-based and to provide docent training.
· Author grant proposals for exhibition, research, publication, and conservation support.
