The Head of Learning and Engagement at the Kemper Art Museum in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts is responsible for the development, supervision, and implementation of academic and public education programs that advance the Museum’s mission to provide excellence in object-based learning and engage the campus population, its visitors and alumni, the St. Louis region, and the global art community. The position oversees the development of dynamic public programs and cross-disciplinary educational tours based on the Museum’s collection and exhibitions for a broad range of audiences to deepen community engagement and accessibility, integrate Museum resources into school and university curricula; and collaborate with partners both on and off campus to build diverse Museum audiences. As head of the department this position reports to the Director & Chief Curator and supervises the Museum Academic Programs Coordinator, Associate Educator for School and Teacher Programs, student educators, and other part-time student assistants.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages public programs and other arts-related events in conjunction with temporary exhibitions and permanent collection displays.
  • Directly supervises and provides mentorship for the Associate Educator for School and Teacher Programs and Museum Academic Programs Coordinator, including the development of PreK-12 school and university curriculum programs, and student workers.
  • Oversees the development of community engagement to build audiences for exhibitions and programs and expand the Museum's role in the St. Louis region, including listening sessions, tours, and partnerships with organizations on and off campus to support lifelong learning and accessibility.
  • Establishes and manages education department budgets.
  • Researches and applies for education program grants and assists with components of grant applications and reporting.
  • Oversees the development of online and print educational materials, including digital learning resources for educators and visitor guides.
  • Leads tours, presents programming and research to advisory groups and at conferences, and publishes scholarship in the field of museum education.
  • Reviews and develops print, digital, and hands-on interpretive materials in collaboration with curatorial and publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with current issues in and interest in advancing the contemporary discourse of museum pedagogy.
  • Bachelor's and Master's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Humanities or related field.
  • Three years of Arts Education Program Development experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • University art museum experience.
  • Gallery teaching experience.
  • PhD in Art History, Museum Studies, Humanities or related field.
  • Five years of Art Museum Education Program Development
