Since its establishment in 1941, the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University has grown from a small university teaching collection into one of the most significant university art collections in the United States. A preeminent teaching museum on the Indiana University campus, its internationally acclaimed collection includes more than 45,000 objects representing nearly every art-producing culture throughout history from around the world. The Eskenazi Museum of Art recently completed a $30 million renovation of its acclaimed I. M. Pei–designed building. The newly renovated museum is an enhanced teaching resource for Indiana University and southern Indiana. The museum is dedicated to engaging students, faculty, artists, scholars, alumni, and the wider public through the cultivation of new ideas and scholarship.

The Eskenazi Museum seeks to hire a Director of Administration and Strategic Initiatives who will provide oversight of the museum’s operations, including budget planning, security operations, and human resources. The Director of Administration serves as a member of the museum’s senior leadership team and will lead the museum’s efforts to be a financially sustainable and inclusive part of Indiana University. The successful candidate will be coming to the Eskenazi Museum at an exciting juncture, joining a senior leadership team that is in the process of implementing a five-year DEAI strategic plan and exploring ways to broaden our audience impact through new strategic initiatives. 

Key responsibilities 
Budget
• Direct the annual budgeting process and the development of financial plans, including annual/multi-year fiscal forecasts to meet strategic goals
• Develop, recommend, and maintain, as approved by the museum director, short- and long-range financial plans, taking into account multiple and complex funding sources
• Through a dotted line reporting relationship with the museum’s business manager, oversee the museum’s finance department in the production of financial projections and the development of business plans and goals

Operations
• Supervise the security and guest services team
• Ensure procurement of equipment and services
• Serve as liaison between the museum and residential programs and services at the university, which facilitates operations at the museum gift shop/cafe

Human Resources
• Serve as the museum’s human resources representative, liaising with the university’s Human Resources department to facilitate recruitment, hiring, separations, compensation, benefits, and conflict resolution
• Maintain personnel records and keep employees informed of changes in benefits and university policies
• Oversee payroll and paid time off systems
 
Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

Education
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in museum services or related field
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Arts Administration, or similar field

Work Experience
Required:
• 4 years in museum services or related field
• 1 year of management experience in museum services or related field
Preferred:
• 5 years of related work experience, including 3 years managing teams and constructing complex budgets
• Experience managing human resources

• Demonstrates ability to support institutional operations and related programs through fiscal analysis and modeling

• Superior organizational and time-management skills

Salary Range
$85,000-$90,000 annual
