Director of Institutional Giving
San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is searching for qualified candidates for the position of Director of Institutional Giving. A vital position for SAMA’s ambitious Advancement charge, this position is responsible for building and sustaining institutional revenue from corporations, foundations, and government entities to further the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the Museum.

Through its comprehensive art-centered programming, SAMA attracts ~140,000 visitors annually. Position Summary:
The Director of Institutional Giving reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) and works closely with members of the Advancement team, including the Director, Individual Giving & Membership, Director, Advancement Operations, the Events Manager, and a part-time Grant Writer, as well as members of SAMA’s Finance/Business Office, the Marketing team, and other Museum colleagues.
The Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for the development and execution of the overall strategy for institutional gift development. Accordingly, the Director is also responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of foundation and corporate donors, with ongoing prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for all potential sources of contributed revenue (grants, program/event sponsorships, employee, and matched giving initiatives, etc.). The implementation of this will involve a strategic action plan and comprehensive calendarized process, inclusive of target donors, strategic priorities, giving histories, philanthropic projections, key dates, institutional stakeholders, and linkages to SAMA trustees. Working as a core member of the SAMA Advancement team, the Director of Institutional Giving will support a current annual philanthropic goal of $1,866,000 (approximately 50% of the total philanthropic goal for the year). The Director will work closely with the CAO and will receive support from the Museum’s part-time Grant Writer.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Researches, cultivates, and solicits local, statewide, and national prospects and donors for general operating, exhibition, educational, curatorial, in-kind, and capital support through a span of institutional ‘entry points,’ defined interests, and desired donor and pipeline diversification. This will require working through a span of individual donors with CAO and SAMA colleagues, including the Director of Individual Giving & Membership, and, occasionally, members of the Board of Trustees.
- Activates all institutional initiatives through a disciplined, tailored, calendarized process, inclusive of finite strategies, tactics, workflows, and reports, as well as quarterly projections and annual forecasts.
- Works with Director of Individual Giving & Membership, the CAO, and SAMA Trustees to secure target corporate leaders and Board representatives.
- Works closely with SAMA’s Marketing department and other members of the Advancement team on corporate sponsorship packages, and benefits fulfillment.
- Supervises and collaborates with the Museum’s p/t Grant Writer on the development of proposals, applications, strategic narratives, and financial reports for target foundations, corporate partners, and government entries. Occasionally, the Director is responsible for the actual writing and submission of these.
- Develops and activates an institutional stewardship plan to ensure the Museum is top-of-mind, given foremost consideration of funding requests, and, in some instances, receives opportunities to apply for institutional funding. This should involve the tenets of moves management and engagement by other Museum/Board of Trustee colleagues.
- Ensures that all grants, sponsorships, and other institutional gifts are acknowledged and recognized in a timely manner within best-practice standards, and all commitments are honored.
- Tracks and reports fundraising progress on a regular basis, including comparisons of budget to actuals, and progress to goal on the part of SAMA’s annual operations, exhibition, education, and other program budgets, working closely with the Museum’s Finance/Business Office, the Director of Advancement Operations, the Curatorial, and Education teams.
- Represents the Museum as a key ambassador and builds authentic, lasting relationships with donors, partners, vendors, and contractors.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of philanthropic trends.
- Participates in community wide event and networking opportunities.
- Attends SAMA events on evenings and weekends as appropriate.
- Performs additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
- At least four (5-7) years of professional fundraising experience and budget management with a high-performing organization that includes end-to-end institutional and individual giving, membership, endowment, special events, and capital support.
- Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding philanthropic goals in a previous position with a minimum organization budget of $10 million and success in securing, leveraging, and sustaining annual and multi-year institutional gifts of at least $1.75-3M.
- Exceptional written/verbal presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven skills: listening, negotiation, problem-solving, research, and cultivation.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and donor database software.

- A portfolio of writing samples is required.
Education:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent professional work experience.
Preferred:
- Certified Fund-Raising Executive.
- Experience with local, Texas-based, and national institutional contributors.
- Experience in the arts and culture arena.
