Director of Individual Giving & Membership
San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is searching for qualified candidates for the position of Director of Individual Giving & Membership. Vital to the success of SAMA’s ambitious Advancement charge, this position is responsible for the cultivation and management of individual donors and the museum’s membership program.

Through its comprehensive art-centered programming, SAMA attracts ~140,000 visitors annually. Position Summary:
The Director of Individual Giving & Membership reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) and works with members of the Advancement team, including Advancement Operations, Visitor Services, Institutional Giving, and Events colleagues, as well as other Museum management.
The Director of Individual Giving & Membership is responsible for meeting philanthropic goals through individual giving and the Museum’s membership program, including support for general operations, finite annual support, exhibition and educational programming, and special projects. In this regard, this position supports the Advancement team in all forms of experiential engagement, including finite presentations, exhibition openings, year-round targeted, small-group initiatives, and larger special events, to encourage meaningful relationship-building, active donor involvement, philanthropic contribution, and overall fidelity. Consistent, donor-focused written communication is integral to the position as well. As a key member of the Advancement team, the Director of Individual Giving & Membership designs and implements ongoing cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation efforts to support a current annual financial goal of $1.64M (approximately 44% of the total philanthropic goal for the year). The Director oversees and directly manages both a Membership Manager and Visitor Services Manager.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
General Membership
Develops and executes strategy for growing and sustaining a healthy membership program as pertinent to the Museum’s pipeline and growth. Overall responsibility for:
• Budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
• Onsite membership conversion, service, and visibility (working with Visitor Services).
• Development of a comprehensive calendarized membership plan that addresses all membership campaigns, needs, and touchpoints:
o Prioritization of membership renewals to ensure a strong base of support.
o Activation of acquisition lapsed recapture, and upgrade campaigns throughout the year.
o Creation of targeted member events, programs, and opportunities to foster engagement, investment, and renewal.
o Consistent stewardship communication and outreach to foster a keen sense of belonging and deeper levels of engagement.
• Liaises with SAMA Marketing department and members of Advancement to create membership materials, packages, and appeals, and to broaden the knowledge base for all philanthropic efforts.
• Actively works to cultivate new memberships (and donors) while expanding and deepening existing relationships.
• Works with CAO and other department colleagues to ensure that all donations are acknowledged promptly (and personally, where appropriate) within best- practice standards.
• Creates regular and meaningful reporting for CAO and other Museum senior leadership (in concert with Director of Advancement Operations) to track fundraising progress against plan each month, quarterly, and as needed.
Individual Giving
Directs and manages a finite donor portfolio ($2,500+) through in-person and tailored written interactions/engagements, the formation of specific action plans and calendar of touchpoints, sometimes involving CAO, and members of SAMA’s Board of Trustees.
• Manages, solicits, and stewards existing donors and supports pipeline-building for individual giving prospects at all levels, focusing on retention and upgrades throughout the donor experience.
o Creates tailored plans for donor communications and stewardship, as well as written and verbal presentations, incorporating the principles of moves management and the involvement of supervisor, other team members, and SAMA Trustees, when appropriate.
o Works with SAMA Marketing on the development and dissemination of written appeals, invitations, and donor collateral.
o Conducts prospect research and solicitation of revenue for general operating, exhibition, education, special project, in-kind, and capital.
• Identifies, tracks, and leverages Board relationships with individual donors, working primarily with the CAO, and the Museum’s Advancement Committee.
• Collaborates with Director of Institutional Giving on actionable leads from target corporations and foundations as applicable to individual cultivation and gifts that leverage institutional support for SAMA.
• Maintains donor summaries and reports in Altru database for all active relationships, working with the Director of Advancement Operations.
• Ensures appropriate donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and recognition throughout the year.
• Works with CAO and Events Manager on the design, preparation, budgeting, planning, delivery of a variety of year-round donor-centered engagements, including event design, outside partnership/support, list development, event mailings, internal coordination, and follow-up.
• Implements planned giving activity in conjunction with CAO.
• Tracks and maintains giving/projections to ensure philanthropic goals are met.
• Represents the Museum as a key ambassador and builds authentic, lasting relationships with donors, partners, vendors, and contractors.
• Participates in community wide events and networking opportunities.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of philanthropic trends.
• Attends events on evenings and weekends as appropriate.
• Performs additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
• At least (5-7) years of professional fundraising experience and budget management with a high-performing organization that includes support and activation of membership, individual giving, institutional giving, endowment support, special events, and capital support.
• Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding philanthropic goals in a previous position with a minimum organization budget of $10 million and success in increasing membership support and securing annual and multi-year gifts of at least $1.5-2 million.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience building, managing, and supporting a positive, high-performing team.
• Proven and directly applicable skills, including active listening, problem-solving, research, and cultivation.
• Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and donor database software.

Education:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent professional work experience.
Preferred:
• Certified Fund-Raising Executive
• Experience with local, Texas-based, and national contributors.
• Experience in the arts and culture arena.
