A Day for Detroit

August 14, 2013

Today, August 14, 2013, many websites are celebrating "A Day for Detroit" by featuring favorite artworks from the Detroit Institute of Arts' collection.  The event, which was organized by arts journalist Tyler Green, began as a show of support for the DIA in the wake of threats to the collection stemming from the city of Detroit's bankruptcy.

We are sharing The Wedding Dance by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, which is one of DIA director (and longtime AAMD member) Graham Beal's "staff picks" from the collection. The Wedding Dance is also part of the city-owned collection at stake in bankruptcy negotiations.

More of Beal's favorites are available on the staff picks page of the DIA website. We encourage you to share your own favorites from the DIA collection on your own website, or on Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #DayDetroit.

More information on A Day for Detroit is available at Modern Art Notes and the Detroit Free Press. AAMD statements on the unfolding situation in Detroit are available a here.
