Art Museum Day 2016

For the seventh year, AAMD is uniting its membership to celebrate Art Museum Day! Held in concert with  ICOM’s International Museum Day, this year AAMD’s Art Museum Day will take place on and around Wednesday, May 18.

In 2015, approximately 150 member museums offered free admission, special programs and events in an international celebration of the importance of museums in our world.

Many AAMD members will offer free or reduced admission, educational programs, and/or discounts on or around May 18. AAMD also encourages museum visitors to use social media to share their Art Museum Day experiences with their museum and with their social networks.

AAMD Museums: Register for Art Museum Day Here!

We're also delighted to announce that AAMD is working with Snapchat to showcase Art Museum Day and the variety of special activities and offerings provided by participating member museums. On May 18, International Museum Day will be featured on Snapchat as one of their “Live Stories,” enabling users to share their experiences and to see how others around the world are celebrating Art Museum Day. See our list of art museums on Snapchat here!

May 4: Snapchat Webinar

On May 4, 2016 AAMD will be hosting a webinar on the ways that museums can utilize Snapchat to their advantage.  Snapchat is not just another social media platform, but one of the fastest growing and the one most used by smartphone users between the ages of 13-34.  Snapchat has the potential to be an effective tool for museums to use to paint museums in a more accessible light and invite new viewers in. Our group of panelists all use Snapchat successfully for their institutions, and all in different ways. During this webinar, they will discuss their respective institutional strategies, how to get started, why they believe Snapchat is an important platform to be on, and any pitfalls that should be avoided.
If you have anybody on your staff that would be interested in this webinar, please forward it to them.

Recording available here!

Panelists:
Alie Cline, Blanton Museum of Art
Michael Lachowski, Georgia Museum of Art
Abraham Ritchie, MCA Chicago
Lucy Redoglia, LACMA

Adult Program:
Color Woodcuts wth Gesine Janzen
11 AM - 5 PM, $60/65

Participants will produce color reduction woodcuts from a single block. Using a process that starts with drawing, carving, layering on color, and then printing, participants will repeat the cycle, each time carving more away from the block and layering consecutive colors on top of each other until the image is complete.

Often the artist will begin with pale shades and end with the darkest colors printed last. This process can be a very spontaneous and efficient way to build an image.
