The High Museum of Art has awarded the 2013 David C. Driskell prize to Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Atlanta, GA. Established in 2005, the Driskell Prize recognizes a scholar or artist in the beginning or middle of his or her career whose work makes an original and important contribution to the field of African American art or art history. The prize is named for David C. Driskell, an artist and groundbreaking scholar of the African Diaspora.

“David is an icon and a pillar in the field, and I am extraordinarily humbled to receive the award in honor of a practicing artist, scholar, mentor and friend,” Brownlee said. “This is just an incredible endorsement of the work that we collectively do here at Spelman.”

“Andrea Barnwell Brownlee’s leadership for the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has helped engage thousands of visitors through highly significant exhibitions and acquisitions,” said Michael E. Shapiro, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., Director of the High.

The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is the only museum in the country dedicated to visual art made by and about women of the African Diaspora. More information on the David C. Driskell Prize is available here.
