Nazi-Era Provenance Workshop
The 2017 AAMD Advanced Nazi-Era Provenance Workshop will feature an international component, which will include archivists from two of the most important and interconnected dealers active before, during, and after World War II: Thomas Agnew & Sons, housed at the National Gallery in London; and Colnaghi, stored outside London at the Windmill Hill Archives, Waddesdon Manorwhile. Additionally there will be an introduction to the archives of M. Knoedler, held by the Getty Research Institute. The Agnew and Knoedler archives have been partially digitized and made available online; Colnaghi is only available on site. The day will conclude with a presentation by the archivist of the U.S. National Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives.
Location The workshop will be held in Washington DC, at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from approximately 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. In addition, on Wednesday, June 21, an optional half day at National Archives at College Park will be offered from 10:00-1:00, at which time participants will have the opportunity to consult directly with Workshop instructors on specific research needs.
Pre-requisites The workshop is designed for advanced researchers, with prerequisite experience, with preference given to those who currently have a museum affiliation and is limited to 30 participants to ensure a useful hands-on experience. We have reserved a limited number of places for non-US based workshop participants, to provide opportunities for networking and information exchange.
Since the workshop will include some use of National Archives documents available on The International Research Portal and the National Archives on-line catalogue, each participant should bring a wifi-capable laptop or tablet in order to participate.
Application The deadline to apply was March 10, 2017. Participation is limited to 30 people; qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. The information on the application will help the workshop leaders determine participants who have the prerequisite experience.
Registration fee $175, includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and an evening reception and transportation to the US National Holocaust Memorial Museum, and optional day at the National Archives in College Park.
Travel stipends available The Getty Foundation is offering a $500 stipend to defray travel expenses to the first twenty qualified applicants who indicate need. To qualify for the stipend participants must be from a U.S. museum, which is not located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area; the stipend will be paid to the museum at time of on-site registration. Only one applicant per museum is eligible to receive the stipend.
The Association of Art Museum Directors and the National Archives and Records Administration gratefully acknowledge the generous support from the Getty Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for this program.
